Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is It Okay To Quit HRT - Estradiol Years After Hysterectomy?
I had a hysterectomy in summer 2008 - everything was removed, even ovaries. I ve been taking 1 mg of Estradiol ever since and I m worried that I may be taking it longer than I should. I ve researched the pros and cons of quitting it but there is equal argument for both. I don t know what to do....I want to stop taking it but not if it will put me as risk. I m fairly healthy, almost 44 yo. No history (or family history) of cancers and I quit smoking more than a year ago. Can you please advise me if you feel - after almost 6 years - I should discontinue HRT?
The majority of women taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) will decide, at some stage, to discontinue their treatment.
When a woman wishes to continue, there should be a discussion about the benefits and risks for that individual woman and what she could expect if she stops treatment.
In recent years, many women were advised to stop HRT after 2–5 years of use or at the age of 60, although the evidence for this advice is uncertain. Please meet at your clinician.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
