Is It Normal To Have Renal Failure Due To Swelling In Prostate? Can This Be Considered Septic Shock?
My father is 78 years old, he recently had his prostate swell and cut off his ability to pee. After a couple days he decided he should go to the hospital because he wasn't feeling well (he didn't even realize it was because he wasn't peeing). He was admitted and they drained 2.2 liters of urine out of him when they inserted a catheter. He was in renal failure and they gave him a blood transfusion. My questions are 1) Is this sepsis? Septic shock? Or just renal failure? 2) He has always been active and in pretty good shape. He was in the hospital for a week. He has been in rehab now for 3 weeks and is still not able to walk on his own. Is this normal? If so how long should his rehab take and how does his condition knock the hell out of him like it did?
1. The signs of sepsis include high fever. If the only sign was lack of peeing, then, it is only related to the urinary tract (kidney failure due to prostate overgrowth or problems).
2. With regards to the time he needs to rehab, it all depends on the severity of his condition before and improvement after treatment. If he had good improvement, then, he will be ok again.
However, he should keep doing scheduled check-ups for his prostate and kidney state to prevent relapse.
All the best! Dr.Bardha
