Is It Normal To Have Cramps And Continued Spotting With Norethisterone?

Hi, I started spotting on day 14 after my last period. My gynecologist said it was ovulation bleeding and prescibed Norethisterone for 2 weeks at a dosage of 2 tablets twice daily. I m into the 4th day of taking the tabs and I ve noticed that the spotting has not stopped. Actually it has become heavier and I get cramps like I do during my periods. is that normal or do I need to go see the doctor again?

Hello,
Thanks for sharing your health concern with us. It is not normal for the spotting/bleeding to continue. Also, ovulation bleeding is usually very slight and can be seen for a couple of days only. Persistent bleeding indicates either a breakthrough bleeding due to improper hormone supply or an unhealthy pregnancy, in your case. I would suggest that you see your doctor immediately for further management. You need a sonogram of the pelvis, blood counts and coagulation profile. Styptics are needed to arrest the bleeding. If everything is fine, a couple of hormone courses should suffice. Please maintain a healthy lifestyle. Take care.
