Is It Normal To Have An Abnormally Heavy Bleeding After A Few Days Delay In The Period?

I started my period today and it was normal. I took a shower and waited about 10 min to put in a new tampon. I was not bleeding that hard. The tampon was on the dry side and took a min to get in when I pulled it out the whole applicator was covered in blood and it was enough to splatter my leg the whole side of the toilet my hand and run down my arm and all over the floor. I actually dropped the applicator in the bathtub cause it was such a mess and scared me. I tried going to the walk in clinic but the wait time is extremely long so I got an appointment for the 2nd this is not normal for me I was also a few days late and have been extremely stressed and my hormones are out of balance. Is this a possible normal thing or is there something I should watch for before going to the ER?
