Is It Normal To Have A Cartilage That Gets Into The Joint Causing Pain?

I have a high ankle sprain grade 2 maybe 3. It has been 6 weeks and the doctors said I can start therapy. It has been progressing, however, there is at least one piece of cartilage that was seen on the ultrasound which seems to get into the joint and hurts. Is this common? Is there a way to prevent this from happening? I am female, 45, never sprained anything.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

The piece of cartilage appearing in a previously injured joint acts as a "loose body" and may produce pain & recurrent swellings of the joint.

An MRI scan of the involved joint will clearly shows the extent and severity of the cartilage damage inside the joint.

If the cartilage piece is significantly large and is presenting with pain & limitation of movement in the joint along with swelling, then it can be effectively addressed by Arthroscopic excision.

So, I suggest you to consult an Arthroscopic surgeon for further evaluation and management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good luck
