Is It Necessary To Get Gluten Before Having Gluten Test?

We think that my husband has a gluten allergy, we called his dr at the va yesterday to ask for a gluten allery test, his dr said he has to continue to eat gluten for the next 2 weeks to be able to do the test. Does he really need to continue to eat it and hurt for 2 more weeks or is his dr. just stalling ? I dont understand the reasoning of 2 more weeks.
