Is It Bad To Drink Alcohol When You Have Mono?

Hello, I was diagnosed with mono 3 weeks ago, and had symptoms for about a week leading up to that. After a week of being diagnosed, I went to the doctor and got a liver spot test, which came back showing that I had no inflammation in my liver. A week ago I went for another check up, and my doctor checked me out and did abdominal palpitations in order to check for an enlarged spleen or an enlarged liver, but both were normal size and in the right place in my abdomen. There was no inflammation. He even told me I could go back to weight lifting and heavy exercise and do normal things again, just not any contact sports just to be on the completely safe side. Last night, I had about 5 to 6 alcoholic drinks over the course of 3 hours. I m 6 3 and weight about 182 pounds. Was this insanely stupid? I have been feeling good for two weeks now and don t even have any symptoms of mono any more. Will this cause any short term/ long term adverse effects on my body? Should I do anything about it, other than not drink for awhile? I know I should not have and won t be drinking again for a long time.

No, not all that bad. The complication of mono that your doctor is worried about is an enlarged spleen. The spleen acts like one large lymph node. When all the other lymph nodes have decreased in size, so has the spleen. If they are all huge, the spleen could pop and cause serious bleeding. Everything about normal size; no risks. There might be an increased sensitivity to alcohol and 6 drinks is a bit much (not nearly as bad over 3 hrs as over 1 hour). Short term effects would be within an hour of the drinking. If no incapacitation; nothing bad happened. Long term effects are just really unlikely.
