Is It Advisable To Undergo Both Adenoidectomy And Eartubes For Fluid In The Ear?

My daughter had fluid in her right middle ear and pressure on her other ear. We waited a while to see if they get better by themselves. They didn t. She now has fluid in her left ear and pressure on the other one. She hasn t had ear infection for a long time. Since she was 4. She is 7 now. She failed her hearing tests several times. Doctor suggested to put ear tubes in both ears and also Adenoidectomy? If we do both, will that fix her hearing problem? She doesn t snore nor has any breathing problems. We are trying to decide if we should just go ahead and do both eartubes and Adenoidectomy without questioning or asking for second opinion. If there is a big chance her hearing problem will be fixed then I will do it. If it is questionable, then we will look into it more before we do it.

hello....middle ear fluid accumulation is mostly due to Eustachian tube obstruction by a nasopharyngeal mass. most common cause is adenoid hypertrophy in children. first of all has it been confirmed by x ray nasopharynx or nasal endoscopy that the child has huge adenoids...if yes what percentage the airway is obstructed. if the child is not mouth breathing nor snoring,by this age adenoids should start regressing. you can at present give a try with fluticasone nasal spray in both nostrils, low dose steroids, systemic decongestants (levocetrizine
+pseudoephedrine) and mucolytics....it works good..however if it doesn't work you can jus go for adenoidectomy if huge adenoids are confirmed...adenoidectomy only resolves the middle ear effusion in most of the cases.... if hearing loss is more than 30-40 db on hearing tests you can undergo ear tubes..
