Is Insulin Advisable While On Glipizide For High Blood Glucose Level?

My husband has steroid induced diabetes. On each hospital admission for COPD he is treated with steroids and insulin but has lingering BS problems resulting in use of either insulin or Glipizide after discharge until the condition resolves. His diabetes specialist has him using Glipizide 2.5 ONLY when his pre-supper reading is 200 or more. This happens rarely as we monitor his diet pretty well. Tonight it reached 353. In a situation like that, since the medication takes a while to work, is it ever safe for him to take 1-2 units insulin at same time?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

As the blood sugar is not controlled with insulin, he can take insulin at a low dose. We have to make the blood sugar level under control by insulin or diabetic drugs.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain,
