Is Induced Coma Safe For A Person With Massive Heart Attack?

Hi my name is Bobbi and I have a friend who had a massive heart attack 8 days ago..flat lined twice in the ambulance by the time they got him to the hospital where they performed emergency triple bypass surgery..I first was told he was unresponsive after the surgery but now it is my understanding he is in a medically induced coma with a feeding tube and respirator hook up so he can heal quicker? I have done a little research and this doesnt appear to be the norm at this stage of his recovery. And tonight a friend of mine was told from a nurse his coma is not induced at this point..please help understand

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

In some cases of severe trauma to an organ system, doctors may induce a coma to hopefully allow for faster healing.

In a coma or any sleep state, the metabolic rate of the body slows down as its requirements are less. This means that the body is focused on healing to the source of trauma.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James,
