Is Hernia Responsible For Fluctuation In PSA Levels?
Hi Dr. My husband was having some feet issues and had invested in shoe inserts. He was going to a chiropractor for a lower back injury also. After the chiro worked on him he developed issues with the siataica (sp) nerve and the hernia in his belly button began growing. He went to his primary who said he would just keep an eye on his hernia. Since my husband turned 50 he also had a prostrate exam. All was fine and his psa number was a 1.7. Primary gave him pain killers and sent him on his way. My husband wanted to test his level again since the year before it was 0.8 so he repeated the blood test and it was a 3.2. I know that prostrate levels change back and forth...So my question to you would be is it at all possible that a hernia and all of his other issues to affect his psa? They are suggesting a biopsy and that seems so dangerous.

There is no relation between PSA levels and the hernia nor the sciatica.
PSA is a blood marker of prostate . since the levels are increasing it is better to undergo a biopsy and its not a dangerous procedure. Biopsy is needed to rule out prostate cancer which is the likely cause of increasing PSA levels.
The early detection of this condition carries a good prognosis so i suggest you to follow the advice of the doctor.
