Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 67 year older sister was referred to a specialist to repair a very large hernia. After he evaluated her and reviewed the CT disc he recommended that she seek more advance consult from specialist/surgeons at UAMS. He stated that she would require a more advance surgery to repair this type hernia. Actually he mentioned that it may even require a team of specialist/surgeons to repair the very large hernia. Exactly what type of hernia will require this type of major/serious invasive surgery? Is this type surgery performed often and what is the survival rate?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Hernia repair refers to a surgical operation for the correction of a hernia. It can be of two different types: herniorrhaphy or hernioplasty. Generally, for larger hernia, a prolene mesh is placed inside, which would prevent the recurrence as well as to avoid complications. Surgery depends on the size of hernia. Smaller hernia can be done by laproscopy, which is minimally invasive. Larger hernia needs to be operated under general anaesthesia and is a major surgery. Success rate following mesh repair in large hernia seems to be good. Kindly consult Surgeon in this regard and follow the advise as given by them.
