Is Having Laser Ablation Of The V2 Branch Of The Trigeminal Nerve For Trigeminal Neuralgia Safe?
I am considering having laser ablation of the V2 branch of the trigeminal nerve for the condition of trigeminal neuralgia, which I have had for 15 years. I am 62 years old, with no other significant medical problems. I am concerned about possible complications and the possibility that it will not work. Should I take this drastic step? This condition has certainly affected all aspects of my life. I live on muscle relaxants and narcotics. I have also found it difficult to find physicians who will treat this condition, or who even believe the severity of the pain associated with it. Often times I have been perceived as drug seeking and not believed. While I would like the possibility of no or less pain, I hope that this is the right decision.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
The V2 branch of trigeminal nerve carries sensory fibers to the skin of maxillary area. So, selective ablation of this nerve would help relieve trigeminal neuralgia in maxillary part of the jaw. There won't be other obvious side effects of the procedure. It is safe.
Hope I have answered your query.
