Hello, I have a pretty bad cold and finally decided to take 24hr sudafed. After a couple days, i have very bad bathroom urges and it takes forever to urinate. I drove 9 hrs and had to go to the bahroom multiple times. Seems that s one of the side effects of sudafed. Any othe cold medicine i coul use? Note: i very rarely take medicine so maybe my body does not adjust well

Hello,

Sudafed is a sympathomimetic drug and is widely used as a nasal decongestant. It exerts a decongestant effect on the swollen nasal mucosa of patients with chronic or acute rhinitis, however, it cause adverse effects such as urinary system such as Dysuria, Micurition frequency, nocturia, polyria, urinary retention.

Most patient and most cold, symptoms are limited. the common cold is usually an uncomplicated illness, however, occasional, patients may develop complications (eg, sinusitis, lower respiratory tract disease, asthma exacerbations, acute otitis media..). I am sorry that you have a sever bad cold. For my practice I would to recommend you to use acetaminophen and nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug are roughly equivalent at relieving some symptoms (eg, headache, ear pain, muscle and joint pains, malaise, and sneezing) are safe and well tolerated. Decongestant medicine is more side effect. Primary care is the most important such as saline nasal spray, vitamin C. And you can use Antihistamine like loratadine and intranasal/inhaled cromolyn sodium.

If you have fever, pain urination, frequency, urgency, you should consider urinary tract infection. Go to visit your doctor for a further management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Addiction Medicine Specialist Dr. Dr. Matt Wachsman's  Response
Hi,

It is a stress hormone related drug. It can do that and inflammatory conditions like a cold can do that also. So can a UTI.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Matt Wachsman, Addiction Medicine Specialist
