Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Folic acid is an essential B vitamin your body uses for many purposes. It is healthy to take as a supplement even if you are not pregnant.

Certain kinds of birth defects, called neural tube defects, which can cause malformations of the brain and spinal cord can be associated with a lack of folic acid.

So we generally recommend that all women planning pregnancy take as least 400mg of folic acid daily so they are taking it from the moment of conception.

So I agree with your doctor that you should take the vitamin supplement as ordered, as it will help you have a healthy pregnancy.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today and that my advice was helpful.

Take care, Dr. Brown
