Is Flying Safe After A Head Injury?

Hello Team, my partner had a bicycle accident, with trauma to her head. 2cm Parietal bone fracture with no displacement. Eye socket fracture (bottom ofthe globe 2cm on maxilla; linear fracture with no displacement. Two front teeth knocked out. Currently very swollen but doctors are saying swelñling should go down within 3-4 days. Tomography scans performed. No brain related issues despite her AVM on right frontal lobe which she has had for at least 12 years (3.5 x 4.5 cm stable last review in August 2017).We are in Ecuador and need to travel back to the UK (home). Doctors indicate she should be fine to fly within 7 days. Could you please provide some advise on whether this flight (1 stop over, journey c.18 hours) will be safe for her to take once the swelling isdown_

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The presentation of narrated symptoms suggests that there are bony as well as subcutaneous injuries with hematoma formation.

There is no brain injury evident on CT scan, so once the clinician declares the patient to fly after reassessment, she can take a flight of 18 hours.

Thanks.

Take care.
