Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I went for a mammo for severe pain, severe swelling of one breast and nausea itchy and lumpy breasts to begin with. they said the test was normal but noted on the report was I have extremely dense breasts. I have had a lumpectomy at age 19. cancer runs in the family and im not comfortable with the results. should I pursue further screening. they want to do mammos every 6 months to watch it. its bad enough going yearly. signed. sick and pained in ct
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. Extreme density could be due to fibrocystic disease, breast cancer, and aging process. As you have family history of breast cancer there is risk of cancer. Regular follow up is required every 6 to 8 months to know the progress and identification of any pathology.
I would suggest to consult the authorized surgeon and undergo examination, blood test for tumour marker like cancer antigen 15-3 (CA 15-3), cancer antigen 27.29 (CA 27.29), and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), USG scan, USG guided FNAC. Specific treatment will depend on the cause. Avoid stress, take healthy diet, drink plenty of water and do regular exercise.
Hope this may help you. Contact further if follow up needed.
Best regards, Dr. Sagar
