Is Erectile Dysfunction An Organic Psychological Disorder?

I am 33 male, have a history of pornography and have been masturbating every day for the last 20 years. I have had several female partners in the past and was leading a healthy sex life until 1-2 years earlier where my problem started and got worse gradually. I doubt, I might have suffered from depression for the last few years, with stress from work and the stress of living abroad and lost some of my hair. I have suffered from scalp acne and have used low doses of roucoutanne for 2 X 6 months during this time. I am off the drug for a year now. Nowadays, I have very infrequent and weak morning erections and I can no longer get hard eneough to masturbate when alone, but I can sometimes have sex with my girlfriend. I can have intercourse with my girlfriend expecially in the mornings. I have experimented with viagra, 1/4 of a 25mg viagra is more than eneough for me. One thing I noticed is that just after having the pill, I can get erections in 5 mins. I sometimes think this is a placebo effect until the real effect of the drug kicks in. Apart from that I am perfectly healthy running half marathons, exercising 3/4 days a week. I have had my testesterone, tyroid and prolactin levels checked and all are ok. No blood pressure problems. Not smoking, very little alcohol and healthy diet. Not using any medicine. I have stayed away from sexual activity, porn and masturbation for the last three months but the situation has slightly improved. I have started having wet dreams (the first in my life). Do you think my problem is organic and psychological?

Hello

Short Answer:
Your Problem is Psychological, opt for cognitive Behaviroral Therapy

Detailed Answer:

I read your statement and i understand your concern

Lack of erectile Dysfunction among partners may be caused by various causes ranging for physical to psychological

your case seems to be more psychological than physical cause. However i would go through the physical causes too

>> Low Sex hormone level can be an important cause. Get tested for testesterone and LH FHS levels f

>> If you are taking too much alcohol, try to reduce as it can decrease your libido

>> Certain medication cause decreased desires. Let me know which medication you are taking and are they having side effects including decreased libido

Psychological reasons for ED are stress, anxiety and depression. If you are having some negative thoughts and felling anxious, then your sexual life can be resumed only if you start treatment for anxiety and depression

If i were your doctor, i would have ruled out physical causes first, then evaluated you for depression and anxiety. Then prescribed you Tab Alprazolam 0.25mg once a night for 8 days and also Tab Acralion 200mg 2 tablets once a day for a month

Thanks
Dr Nasir Ali
