Is Enlarged Liver Sign Of Cirrhosis In Kids?

hi.my 14yr old daughter has a transvenous liver biopsy scheduled tues april 7th. 5 yrs ago she was diagnosed ADHD & assumed fatty liver diease. I never put her on ADHD meds because I was scared they would hurt her. 4 weeks ago I had to tk her to the ER she was diagnosed w/ UTI & colontisis. We saw a GI dr a wk after that; in the hospital they gave her a contrast MRI & cat scan.4 months ago she weighted 265lbs as of a week ago she weighs 190. The only place she has fat is in her stomach. GI Dr ordered an ultrasound & the liver function tests. in 06 her ALT was 21, 4 weeks ago it was 42 and 3 days ago it was 52 (all fasting blood work done- DID NOT EAT) GI dr says her ALT 52, ALP,AST, & GGT are elevated. SHe has not had her period but 2 times since she was 13. SHe didnot even walk until she was 18 months. She is extremely forgetful, lol but her ADHD has turned out to be the hidden bleesing. They told me she has tissue in her liver that is causing the enlargement. I am scared. What is the probable outcome? Do you think it could be the begininng stage of cirrhosis. no drugs of anykind does she take

Hi,

If her liver enzymes are elevated and her biopsy shows fatty liver, she is at risk for cirrhosis. Keep in communication with her gastroenterologist and keep working toward getting her to a healthy weight.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. ALICE TURNER, Pediatrician
