Is Elevated Resting Pulse Rate Dangerous?

I have a high resting pulse rate (95-100) even though I work out five days a week, eat properly (loads of fruits and veg). my BMI is 23.6 and my blood pressure is usually 106-115/70-80. I've gone to the doctor twice and she doesn't seem that concerned. Should I be? The lowest I am is about 80.

Hello. Thank you for your question and welcome to HCM. I understand your concern.

If I would have been your doctor, I would also not been worried about your symptoms. I understand that this comes as a worrisome phenomenon to you, as it does to many of my patients. The thing is, the normal heart rate is 60-100 beats per minute, standardized for the worldwide population. However, in certain every-day, normal, physiological situations, such as physical activity, psychological stress and/or having caffeine-containing beverages, the heart rate can go up and reach even really high figures. This is only the heart's response to the increased needs of the organism in these states. Having a resting heart rate of 75-80 beats per minute is practically the median of the normal heart rate provided above. The stress you may experience from this phenomenon, further triggers the release of adrenalin in the organism, which can further increase the heart rate. Therefore, the figures provided by you, are not worrisome and are perfectly normal. Also, the normal blood pressure figures are 100-139/60-89 mmHg. My opinion is that you do not have to worry about these figures, either.

I hope I was helpful. Take care.

Best regards,
Dr. Meriton
