Hi,I am Neethu Vipin (Dietitian & Nutritionist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I m having surgery on Thursday. I think I may have just developed shingles ... i.e., an itchy set of bumps on my back, coming around toward my side. I had shingles a few years ago and got a lot of relief (and a very mild case) from drinking aloe vera juice. Can I drink this before surgery? i.e. right now?
Welcome to HCM and thanks for your query. It is very unusual to get shingles ( Herpes Zoster) twice unless you are immunocompromised. It is caused by the chicken pox virus ( Varicella). I think you should show your lesions to your surgeon and if it is shingles, he may postpone the surgery to avoid infection to others. Whether you can have aloe vera juice or not depends on what surgery you are going to have. Aloe is considered generally safe and there is no evidence that it interferes with blood clotting . It may decrease blood sugar if you have diabetes and are on medicines for the same. If you have to fast before your surgery, there is a possibility of sugar going low. If you have further queries you may search for me at the HCM web site. Best wishes for your quick recovery Dr. Noble Zachariah
