Is Drainage Around An Incision Of An Infected Abscess Normal?

I had an infection in my knee 2 months ago from what they said was cellulitis. There was a big absess that was cut open to drain the infection. was hospitalized, given IV antibiotics. when I came home I had to go back to work everyday at a convenience store. The incision has been healing but I still have alot of drainage. Is this normal?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

After abscess drainage we usually keep the wound open and do not suture to ensure continuous drainage. In your case its already passed two months and discharge even after two months is not usual and have to be evaluated. Consult your treating doctor and get evaluated to look for any persist ant collection. Get an ultrasound scan also.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Its normal to have some amount of serous fluid leaking from the drainage. But if it is pus which is foul smelling and there is rise in body temperature then the wound have have infected again. In that case u need to see a surgeon and evaluate the condition.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
