Is Coughing Up Of Bloody Mucus Normal While Suffering With Pulmonary Embolism?

I have been diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism in my left lung 6 days ago. Onset of symptoms 6.5 days ago. I ve been prescribed xarelto 15 mg 2x a day. On day 3 I coughed out a blood chunk, did the same on day 4. Since then I ve had raspy breathing in left lung and cough out bloody mucus. Is this normal and how long will it last? And what can I do, activity, should I go to work, school live my normal life? I am a 52 yo male, non smoker, not obese not over weight, in good shape, no recent surgeries, no recent injuries, I don t live a sedentary lifestyle. The Drs. Are stumped. What could the cause be? What tests should I ask for? Thank you for your time.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi.

It is normal for the blood in mucus to appear, but your resistance and energy levels might be a little reduced as compared to how they usually are. If you can go about your daily regimen without facing any trouble, and if your routine is not laborious, then it shouldn't be a problem. A repeat chest X-ray, lung perfusion testing and CT scan should help assess the current status.

Best wishes.
