Is Burning Sensation In Vagina Normal While Having UTI?

Hi,

I was given a urinalysis after suffering from intense burning and blood in my urine. I was told I had a UTI, but also needed my kidneys checked out down the road due to finding a lot of blood in my urine and a small amount of protein. I was prescribed Ciprofloxacin and told to take it for 7 days 2X a day. I'm on day 6 of my medication. Although I don't see any blood and feel better, I'm still experiencing a slight burning sensation in my vagina before and after I urinate. Is this normal? I'm not quite sure the antibiotics are completely working.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Slight burning in vagina is part of recovering urinary tract infection.
Guidelines at present would be:

- Continue to drink more liquids along with current antibiotic.
- Keep the genitals clean with antiseptic liquid; gentian violet scrub will
help a lot for faster recovery.
- Avoid sexual intercourse or vaginal manipulations with masturbation.
- Wear loose, clean, cotton inner wears.

I hope I have answered your query. Let me know if you have any further questions.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
