Is Bruising In Face After Dental Cleaning Normal?

My mother, age 92, had a dental deep cleaning on the left side of her face. Afterwards, her face was black-and-blue and swollen on that side, which has persisted for more than a week. Is this normal or indicative of a problem in the way the hygienist did the anesthesia injection or the cleaning. My mom is returning to do the right side, so I want to consider having it done by a different hygienist.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain swelling along with black and blue bruising of the face is not due to the scaling procedure, but yes it is elated to the anaesthesia injection..
At times if the anaesthesia injection pierces the venus plexus [ a mesh of veins] it leads to spilling and accumulation of blood into the soft tissues leading to hematoma formation and bruising..
It seems to be the apparent cause in your mother's case..

I would therefore suggest you to be careful and do not prefer a hygienist to perform the task but consult a Periodontist or a registered dentist to do the scaling with proper aseptic precautions and proper anaesthesia techniques..

For the swelling and bruising you can start doing alternate warm and cool compresses on affected side of face..

Hope this information helps..

Regards.
