Is Breastfeeding A Child Advisable After Cocaine Intake?

Hi, my sister is 32 years old and has 3 month old. She recently just confessed to me that she did several bumps of cocaine two Saturday's ago and has now been just feeding my nephew formula because she doesn't want to breastfeed him. Shocked by this news, I chastised her for her stupid decision especially being it's not something she did even before she was pregnant. so my question is if it's ok she breastfeeds again and if so when can she...if she partied two Saturday's ago?

Hi,

No data are available on the medical use of cocaine in nursing mothers. However, because of its chemical nature, high concentrations of cocaine are expected in milk. Cocaine and its metabolites are detectable in breastmilk, although data are from random breastmilk screening of mothers who used cocaine recreationally rather than controlled studies.

Cocaine breastmilk concentrations have varied over 100-fold in these reports. Newborn infants are extremely sensitive to cocaine because they have not yet developed the enzyme that inactivates it and serious adverse reactions have been reported in a newborn infant exposed to cocaine via breast milk.

Thus, I would suggest that you should consult a Physician as soon as possible and discuss this problem with them and get a solution.
