Is Blood Sugar Level Of 7.5 A Cause For Concern?

I had some blood tests done and my blood sugar level was 7.5. My doctor said I have type 2 diabetes. I started taking metformin today with half a pill, 250mg. I would like to drink alcohol tonight and I understand its not a good idea, but is 250mg going to kill me. I wouldn t have taken it if I knew because this is an pre-planned event. Please help!

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
Glucose levels of 7.5 mmol/L is borderline high glucose levels and thus the doctor has advised it right to take medications to keep your blood glucose under normal levels.
As per the recommendations, people with diabetes can have moderate quantities of alcohol. Men should have no more than 2 drinks per day, which means a drink equal to 12 oz beer, 5 oz glass of wine or 1 ½ oz distilled spirits (vodka, whiskey or gin). Intake should not be too frequent and would be best advised to be occasional.
Consume your drink slowly.
Take care not to drink on an empty stomach or when your blood glucose is low. Do not delete food from your regular meal plan and replace it with alcohol. Keep yourself well hydrated by consuming good quantities liquids free of calories like water or soda.
Since alcohol can cause hypoglycemia shortly after drinking or up to 24 hours after drinking, you need to check your blood glucose before you drink, while you drink and after drinking about 24 hours later.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
