Is Blood In Urine 2 Months After Keyhole Cancer Surgery Normal?

I am 68 yrs old, 182cm tall, weigh 106kg and fairly fit by walking at least 5 km per day, recently , by chance, a lump was found inside one of my kidneys which proved to be cancerous. It was removed by burning it out with keyhole surgery, bleeding was experienced up to two weeks after the op and a little blood is still in my urine after 2 months. My GP seems to think there is nothing to worry about as I do hot have any infection, although a recent test showed that I had too much protein in my urine and signs of dehydration through lack of water. I do not drink, or smoke, do you have any advice? Sidney

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Blood in urine at 2 months post keyhole surgery is not normal at all. Are you currently on any treatment post-surgery as chemotherapy or radiotherapy? With other medications as blood thinners? Vital information needed for this query.

Need definite evaluation in terms of urine microscopy, culture report, serum creatinine, clotting parameters, ultrasound of abdomen and pelvis. Selected cases need CT IVP to find the reason behind it according to the clinician judgement.

Till then some guidelines that will help you are:
• Drink plenty of liquids preferably boiled water, coconut water, lemon juice, green tea, coffee, buttermilk, etc., to maintain the hydration.
• Cranberry sachet once a day in glass of water with citrus fruits help.
• Keep your blood sugar, BP, weight under control.
• Continue to remain ambulatory.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
