Is Blood In The Urine Suggestive Of Kidney Stones?

I am 80 and I am on dialysis. Two weeks ago I had blood in my urine but it proved not to be a urinary tract infection. The doctor felt I passed kidney stones. Tonight, I passed small amount of urine but there was blood in it again. Would like to know what steps I should take. I am on Plavix and Coumadin due to cardiac stent surgery in March, 2016. I also have a groin hernia which is scheduled for March surgery.

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Blood in urine in your case could be due to kidney stone, and coumadin side effect. Generally kidney stone is associated with pain. I would suggest to consult the urologist and undergo USG scan to confirm stone and any internal organ pathology. If USG will come normal then it is due to coumadin side effect.

For that consult the cardiologist and cut down the dose or use minimal dose. If bleeding persists then you should stop the coumadin and use alternative drug like dabigatran after consulting the cardologist. Avoid stress, take healthy diet, drink plenty of water and juice of cranberry, orange and pineapple, and do regular exercise.

Hope this may help you. Contact further if follow up needed.

Best regards,
Dr. Sagar
