General & Family Physician 's  Response
Yes black tarry stool may be due metformin. It has been reported but its incidence is not known. Also change in color of urine may occur after taking metformin. It is harmless. There are other causes of black tarry stools which need to be excluded.
Advice
1.     Continue metformin as suggested
2.     Investigation – routine examination of stool, stool for occult blood, blood Hb%
Thanks
