Is Benadryl Right Medication For Red And Swollen Skin After Appendectomy?

A week ago (Thursday) I had an emergency appendectomy. Since approximately Sunday, I have developed a rash on my abdomen - first around where the areas that drs had placed adhesive tabs (for EKG), and progressing across my abdomen and now to the top of my thighs. This evening, the areas around the incisions and steri strips are red and swollen and the other areas containing rash are unbearably itchy and red. I have an appointment with another dr in the morning, but am unsure if I should actually go to the ER, since the incision areas are now red and swollen (they were not at time of talking with the nurse). The nurse advised me to take Benadryl and apply Benadryl antiitch cream. Neither fully eleviates the discomfort. Should I continue with the Benadryl until the morning s appointment or visit an ER this evening?

Hello,

Benadryl should help in this as it is used to treat allergies and the issues you are having are likely a result of allergic reaction. Although other reasons cannot be denied. If this is causing immense discomfort, and the Benadryl ointment is not providing relief then its better to go to ER as i.m or i.v medications are needed for faster relief. In ER after careful examination of the swellings, they can rule out other causes with the help of other tests if required.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
