Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
hello, my question is how does the drug atenolol work and is this a safe drug. I was in the ER and not feeling well and they gave me this drug. i spent years trying to get my blood pressure normal and nothing was working untill they gave this drug to me. was 222 over 116 in hospital now its 127 over 74 how could this be. my normal for years would be about 180 over 90. Mind you Iam not complaining if this is for real and it stays that low.
Thank you for you question! Regarding you concern, I would say that first of all you should consult your GP, an internist or a cardiologist because High Blood pressure is usually a chronic disorder (and in your case seems to be so); and you should schedule a strategy for its management. Besides this BP is a risk factor for coronary artery disease and future cardiac and neurologic events; so you should define your risk level profile, and this can be done by the aforementioned specialists. So you should perform a physical examination and some blood tests. According to Atenolol use; it is one of the options in treating blood pressure; frequently in combination with other drugs. It is effective, especially in hyperdynamic states of blood circulation. But for its mantenance therapy you should consuld specialist opinion after what I recommended. Hope to have been helpful to you. Greetings. Dr. Iliri
