Is An Antibiotic Advisable For Colon Inflammation Before A Colonoscopy?

I went to the doctor today and they did a CT scan. They say I have inflamation in my lower colon and need a colonoscopy. They also did blood work and the white count was 18,000. Why didn t they go ahead and give me an antibiotic since i m not having the procedure until next week and am in pain.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HCM

The colon inflammation mentioned is likely to be inflammatory bowel disease and not an infection. Antibiotics are not the treatment for inflammatory bowel disease. Acute flare up of IBD is managed with corticosteroids.

Hope this answers your question
