Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter was hospitalized with pneumonia and was released with furosemide 40 mg. It is a possibility she may have taken an extra dose, but the pills were many hours apart. The first at 130 this afternoon, the other at 10pm this evening. Should we contact poison control?
Furosemide usually has effect for about 6 hours, so there is no need to worry about an overdose. The only concern might be if the Furosemide causes her to urinate too much fluid and she becomes dehydrated, but I would expect that if she takes one single dosage less the next day, she should be fine. I would suggest calling her doctor to ask if she should hold her next dose of Furosemide, or just continue as prescribed. Either way will probably be fine.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Aaron Branch,
