Is A Three Week Menstrual Cycle A Cause For Concern?
My friend has about a 3-week menstrual cycle. I don't know if that could be a problem. She is 23-yo, Muslim, and has never seen a gynecologist. She is a virgin. How imperative is it that she be examined. She seems largely uninformed about sexual and sexual health matters.
Menstrual cycle abnormalities do not necessarily need a physical examination to make a diagnosis. So if your friend chooses to see a GYN they will likely do hormone and blood tests to evaluate this problem and not need to do a pelvic examination.
Menstrual cycles typically range from 24-35 day cycles. If your friend is in that range, she does not need a medical evaluation at all. A cycle counts from the day the period starts... Not ends- you should clarify this with your friend she may be confused and not telling you the correct information if she does not know a lot about sex. Your friend can anonymously ask questions herself on this site if she has access to the internet.
If she truly has a 21 day cycle, she should have an evaluation, and there is really no reason she would need a pelvic exam.
I hope my advice was helpful and I answered your question.
Best wishes, Dr. Brown
