Is A Tender, Red Sore On Upper Arm Suggestive Of IV Infection?

My mom is in the hospital and has developed a sore upper arm that is tender, hard and red. I am concerned because it is taking some time to get an ultrasound to determine what it is. She has been taken off of her blood thinner since she was admitted for bleeding from the rectum. Could this be an infection from the IV or a blood clot. I am concerned because I don t want it to go too long. She is 88 years old.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
From history it seems that she might be having thrombophlebitis developing by IV infusion.
She might require one course of antibiotic medicine for 5 days.
Apply Thrombophob cream on affected site.
Ok and take care.
