Is A Lump Behind The Ear After Injury A Cause For Concern?

My son banged his ear on the car boot. I put an ice pack on it and there is no blood but he said it was very sore. He has now gone to bed and I noticed that the bottom of his ear is very red, I think a little swollen but there is no fluid coming from his ear. he will not let me feel it to check for lumps, is he ok to go to bed, he does not seem drowsy or nauseous.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query your son have symptoms of lump behind the ear which is painful i.e very sore, Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like abscess , sebaceous cysts , lymphadenopathy , acne mononucleosis , infected lipoma and mastoiditis . But in you case it seems to me that the symptoms are due to either infected sebaceous cysts or lymphadenopathy. You need not to worry about it. I would suggest you to apply warm compresses and take antihistamine like benadryl twice a day. You should consult ENT specialist for proper examination. Doctor will examine physically to check tenderness and consistency , may order biopsy or blood test . Doctor may prescribe antibiotics along with anti inflammatory. you should avoid touching or picking it repeatedly.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
