Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I ve had a black spot about the size of a pea under my big toenail for a couple months now. Thought I may have stubbed my toe and not realized it but it hasn t moved or gone away. It doesn t hurt and I have struggled with foot fungus for awhile now, but I made the mistake of googling it only to find skin cancer suggestions. I made an appointment with a dermatologist but it won t be for another 5 weeks. Is this something I should make an urgent trip to the Dr for or am I ok waiting til my appointment? I m a 28yr old male.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
No need for urgency. Possibility of fungal infection to toe nail is more likely. It is chronic infection. There is no emergency in this. Usual treatment is optimal foot hygiene, antifungal cream for local application and oral antifungal (fluconazole). Treatment should be taken for longer duration (2-3 months). Also rule out diabetes because diabetic patients are more prone for such fungal infection. So you can wait for 5 weeks. No need for hurry.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
