Is Ventolin Advisable While Suffering With Severe Cough And Blood In Mucus?

I have asthma and I use ventolin when it flares up. Last night I was laughing too much and choked on my saliva (a silly thing). It caused me to go into a coughing fit. I could not breath and, as suggested by a past doctor, I used my inhaler. The coughing continued for quite some time and quite violently. Eventually I found I was coughing up a little blood in my mucus. After a while I managed to calm the coughing and the mucus was clear. I never used my inhaler again though I had issued breathing properly. I was going to use my inhaler this morning but coughed up phlegm with blood in it. I am hoping it was once off. Can I use my inhaler even though there was some blood? I need a little relief...

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The ventolin inhaler is a reliever inhaler which is to be used in an acute asthmatic attack.

The acute attack may present with persistent coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain , wheezing. One or more of these symptoms may be present.

With the persistent coughing, you can use the inhaler to help.

If you are getting frequent asthma attacks, then you may need preventer inhaler i.e- an inhaler to prevent the attacks

The presence of mucus may also mean that you have post nasal drip and need to control this as well.

I hope this helps
