Is Trimethoprim And Iron Tablet Intake Safe While Breastfeeding?

My daughter in law is one week postnatal, diagnosed haematuria and pain, Uti, given trimethoprim. She has started iron as her Hb is only 8. Can the iron tablet interfere with the trimethoprim, and as the baby is jaundiced, and it crosses through breast milk, is this treatment safe ?

Hello,

Yes, trimethoprim secrets in breast milk but in a very small amount so it is generally not a concern and considered safe during breastfeeding. But in a baby with severe jaundice, it shouldn't be given. In your case, I need to know the baby is having jaundice means is it physiological or something serious. Baby's jaundice is after trimethoprim or it was previously only.

In this case, I think the mother can be given some alternative to trimethoprim for her urinary tract infection (UTI). The mother can safely take iron.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
