Is Tagamet Effective In The Treatment Of GERD?

I have a hiatal hernia. I have taken Nexium for 1 year and it controls Gerd. I worry about long term use. Started 600 mg. of Tagamet over the counter. 400 mg. did not work. Is this safer to use forever versus the Nexium? I am 64 years old. Thank you for your response! Diane Taylor YYYY@YYYY

hi sir/mam,Tagamet is a safe drug compared to nexium but it is less effective.any way,you can take Tagamet even for a long time without much adverse effects.the only concern with tagamet is it acts as anti androgen and may cause breast enlargement in males.of course,it’s not that common.let me mention a few measures to prevent GERD :
1)when lying supine head elevation is advised.
2)avoid lying down at least for 1hr after food.
3)take the medication at least half an hour before food.
4)if any chronic cough or constipation,to be treated immediately to prevent increase in Intra abdominal pressure.
5)sedentary life style also precipitates GERD.regular exercise is recommended.
