Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, I am hypothyroid and taking natural dessicated hormone. At 17 weeks pregnancy I asked my Dr about running bloodwork on my thyroid. My levels came back at tsh of 5.9. I m learning now that my levels should have been monitored all along and that hypothyroidism can cause lower IQ in children. Should I be concerned? I m feeling incredibly guilty that I had not insisted on bloodwork sooner.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, I understand your concern. Yes, your TSH level is a bit raised. You are already on thyroid supplements, you will be advised to increase the dose so that the TSH would come to normal. Thyroid hormone deficiency causes lower brain development.. but please don't worry, replacement of sufficient hormone reverts back brain growth to normal. You are just 17 weeks pregnant & the recovery is possible. Only make it a point to get your TSH checked periodically & consult your endocrinologist regularly hence forth. Thanks Only
