Hi. My gf just got her test results and she has been referred to a endocrineologist. Her third generation TSH level is 0.02. Speculatively, what does this mean? Her mom has hx of a tumor on her thyroid.
Hello, I can understand your concern regarding to your gf's health. A low TSH level is suggestive for hyperthyroidism or overactive thyroid. It should be confirmed by checking Ft4 and Ft 3 level, which result high in these cases. The hypothalamic–pituitary–thyroid axis plays a key role in maintaining thyroid hormone levels within normal limits. Production of TSH by the anterior pituitary gland(brain) is stimulated in turn by thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), released from the hypothalamus(brain). Production of TSH and TRH is decreased by thyroxine by a negative feedback process. So a high Ft4 or Ft3 would suppress TSH. There is no need to worry about malignant pathologies because hyperthyroidism is not indicative for cancer. Hope the information will help. Kind regards, Dr.Mirjeta
