Is Seprifilm Beneficial In Treating Adhesions In Abdominal Wall?

2003 - 6 months of excruciating pain in my left side at bottom of rib cage and pelvic bone. After extensive testing and conservative treatments a barium with small bowel f/thru was ordered. Results, my decending colon was adhered to my abdomen wall. 2004 - Surgery, Dr. said it was remarkable, extensive adhesions.... freedom! I had my life back. Procedure was laproscopic. 4.5 years no issues then slowly the familiar pain started. Waited another 6 months and had to have the adhesions removed again. Here it is 2014 and the past 3 months tells me adhesions are back. My physicians thinks it is time to look again. I have been doing a little research regarding open surgery to remove scar tissue with the application of Seprifilm or at least a more thorough look . My pain is now radiating to the middle of my rib cage and to my back. Am I reacting to the pain and life disrupting issues by wanting an open surgery vs. laproscopic? I truly understand the reasons for the less evasive procedure but I d like to not plan to have surgery every 5 years. Would the Seprifilm help with this?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history and understood your concerns.
Recurrent adhesions after any intra-abdominal surgery is a known complication.
Seprafilm is supposed to reduce the incidence but it is the experience of your operating surgeon with this product and his though process that can give the proper usage.
If there is recurrent adhesion, it is wise to go for surgery and use seprafilm.
What happens in future is always unpredictable but the literature indicates some positive effects.
It is also needed to correct the anemia and hypoproteinemia to have proper healing.
Clean surgical techniques helps the best in avoiding or reducing hte formation of re-adhesion.
Hence go ahead as would be planned by your General surgeon.
