Is SMZ-TMP DS Effective In Treatment Of Dental Abcess?

I have a dental abcess and I had it evaluated before and they found my tooth had died. But I didn t have enough money to get the tooth pulled I took amoxicillin at the time now it s four weeks later and I have a abcess again. My father gave me a antibiotic he wasn t able to use and I was wondering if it might be applicable to a dental abcess. the antibiotic is called smz-tmp a generic for Bactrim it says the dose is 800-160 mg per tab once daily.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of dental abscess as your tooth become non vital which is due to presence of infection which has reached pulp and root end and it can leads to bacteremia and septicemia as it can spread to tissue spaces. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to visit dentist/ oral and maxillofacial surgeon once and get it examined completely and start treatment accordingly. You should go for IOPA i.e X-ray of that tooth to check if that could be saved, otherwise take proper course of antibiotics and go for extraction. Bactrim is not very effective for dental abscess cases. You should take Tramadol along with Azithromycin. Maintain complete hygiene and avoid sharp stick food. Drink plenty of water after every meal and brush and floss regularly.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
