Is Proscar Advisable For Prostate Gland Problems?

I m a 62 Hispanic male with prostate problems. My symptoms have pretty much disappeared with the use of Proscar. It is obvious the culprit is DHT. I was reading about the health benefits of castration, longer life span, no prostate problems, reduced stress. Aside from the ethical concerns would this be a viable option for me at my age?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Your problem is due to enlargement of prostate gland which is common in men after the age of 50. What causes enlargement of prostate gland is not known fully. But age is the most important risk factor. But cure is possible by removing the prostate gland by surgery. Castration will not cure your problem and it is not done for enlarged prostate. Surgery for prostate removal is done when symptoms become intolerable or are not responding to medicines. You are the lucky one whose symptoms are responding to Proscar and you should continue with this treatment. Besides medicines and surgery, there are some life-style changes which might relieve your symptoms to some extent.
Advice
1.     Continue Proscar as suggested
2.     Avoid drinking alcohol, tea, coffee or cola as these substances irritate urinary bladder and symptoms worse
3.     Consume less water in the evening but drink at least 3 liters of water in the day time
4.     Empty your bladder while going out of home/office
5.     Eating more fruit and fiber to avoid constipation which can put pressure on the bladder worsening symptoms
6.     Double void to completely empty your bladder – this This involves waiting a few moments after you have finished passing urine before trying to go again
Thanks
