Is Prolia Shot Advisable After A Parathyroid Surgery?

Hi, I am considering using prolia for the first time. I just read the literature where it says to tell you doctor if you have had thyroid - parathyroid surgery. I am wondering why they ask this. I have had my left thyroid removed in 2005 during neck exploration due to a thyroid nodule. ALso. I had one parathyroid removed for biopsy as my PTH was slightly above normal - although no one gland in particular was revealing itself to be the culprit. The parathyroid tissue was normal. When I was a child, radiation therapy was thought to be an effective treatment for mastoiditis. I did have several treatments in about 1954 - and I am wondering if all my neck problems today are a result of this treatment. (I also have developed a parotid tumor which I face elective surgery for removal.) So, I guess my question is - why would having had thyroid/ parathyroid surgery effect whether or not someone would should take (or not) the prolia shot? (The biopsy of my thyroid was positive for papillary cell carcinoma - and I believe Hashimoto s thyroiditis.) Should I be worried about taking the shot?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

You have read it right, that you should inform your doctor about any parathyroid problem before taking this injection. The reason is that this injection is used for osteoporosis, what it does is that it sends calcium from blood to bone. Hence people who have low calcium have not advised this drug as it can cause further low calcium. As calcium is regulated by parathyroid, hence problem there may cause abnormal calcium. So you must inform your doc about it. Prolia injection should anyhow be only taken if advised by the doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
