Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello Sir, I am a 35 years old type 2 diabetic. From last 5 years I have this disease. From last 4 years I am taking Pioglit MF30 medicine once a day. Now my doctor prescribed me Pioz MF 15. I read on net somewhere in 2013 this medicine was banner and not safe. Can you please suggest me is it safe to take this medicine. Regards Bhawdeep Gupta
Hello Bhawdeep Gupta, Pioz Mf is a combinational drug that contains metformin and pioglitazone. Pioglitazone was banned for a brief in India. The reason for ban was that it could increase the risk of bladder cancer. But there are other reports that are contradictory to this association. Several long term studies too have refuted this link. Presently, it is approved in India with a black box warning. The same is the case with the drug in USA. I would not recommend any discontinuation for my patient if he were doing good on pioglitazone. Regular follow up is what I would advice. According to my opinion, the remote bladder cancer risk and the previous ban should not be the reason for stopping the drug use. You can discuss the above points with your diabetologist. If you are still not convinced with the use of pioglitazone, you can ask for alternatives. I hope the above information helps you. Thank you very much for writing into healthcaremagic. Have a wonderful day.
