Is Paxil A Good Alternative To Zoloft?

Hi,my husband is taking zoloft 100mg and he ran out yesterday. He has a friend who takes paxil 30 mg and is insisting he can take these for the next couple days while he gets in to see his psych. I say it s a bad idea but he won t listen. Plus he thinks that he needs to take 100 mg of Paxil to compensate for the zoloft. Can and should he do this?

Hello
Welcome here.
Brief: No, absolutely not.

Detail: zoloft and paxil belong to same class of antidepressants but zoloft 100mg is not at all equal to paxil 100mg. Paxil 100mg can cause troublesome side effects like gastritis, constipation and blurred vision.
Paxil cannot replace zoloft. There will be no benefit as every new drug takes its time to develop its concentration in body. Its better to stay off drug than to take paxil temporarily. Zoloft has half life of 24-30 hours. So even if the drug is not taken for say two days, i dont there should be serious problem.

Hope this helps.
Thanks.
