Is Oleanz Or Joykem Appropriate For Bipolar Disorder?
Hi, This is regarding my Father who has been diagonised with Bipolar Disorder. He is an heart patient also diabetic.Earlier we had been giving Oleanz 5mg for 2 weeks later on another Doctor prescribed Joykem tablet for him stating he is diabetic and it is better to go with joykem rather than oleanz. Now he has stopped taking both of them.I would like to know continuing which tablet would be recommendable? Please advise. Thanks.
Hello, Thank you for asking at HCM. I carefully read your question and understand your concern. It is relevant that your doctor is concerned about Oleanz if your father has diabetes because this group of medications increase the problems with glucose control and also the complications due to diabetes. so if decided to use Oleanz he needs close follow up diabetes to make sure it is not worsening and weight should be measured because Oleanz causes weight gain also. Joykem can be used in bipolar disorder also but does not cause weight gain or sugar level control problems in case of diabetes so would seem more appropriate in your father's case. You will need to decide with the doctor that will follow up your father also as bipolar disorder is chronic and needs careful evaluation, treatment and follow up. I hope this answers to your question and is helpful to you.
